One of the larger repairs I have seen executed on
a cored hull.

Core moisture and delamination detected and
outlined on the cabin top of a 29' Down East Cruiser.
|

Note the crack in the main engine space bulkhead
of this 35 foot powerboat.
|

Deck problems on a 35 foot sailboat. The outlined
area represents the extent of the core moisture.
The striated areas represent the extend of the
resulting delamination and decayed core.

Delamination and core moisture outlined on the
deck of a 40 foot sailboat.
|

Rot and resulting shoddy repair to the engine
space bulkhead of a 40' sportfisherman.
|

|

The taped area outlines a deep but dry void in
the fiberglass layup of this nicely maintained
express cruiser.
|

Always carry paper charts, pay attention to your
chart plotter, and maintain a proper lookout at
all times.
|

This vessel was only three years old but had already
developed a serious problem at the foredeck. The
outlined area represents the total core moisture.
The cross hatched area represents the most severe
accumulation of moisture.
|

This boom failed due to high stress in the wrong
place at the right time.
|

The chalk lines represent the area of hull delamination on an older cored racing sloop.

Percussion testing the hull surfaces of a cold
molded Turkish built vessel with a plastic mallet.

When the Lady Stirling, the past flagship of
Greenport Harbor, was sold to the new owner I was called in to perform the survey. Here I am posing with Dan Hallock who build this 80 foot custom steel gaff rigged schooner from the keel up. The vessel was designed by Charles Wittholz and was constructed in New Suffollk, New York in 2004 and is now in charter service in Naples, Florida.

Another photo of the Lady Stirling as she sits in
berth at Preston's Wharf, Greenport, New York.
|

This 42' cold molded custom schooner was built by
the gentleman in the photo. A beautiful job indeed.

Gill netting for Spanish Macks on the Outer Banks.

Pictured are Outer Banks fishermen Rob West and
Paul Dunne (4th from left and 7th from left) along
with Author Susan West (5th from left) and Andrew
McGowan (6th from left). Read Susan West's book
"Fish House Opera" a collection of true stories
reflecting on the life and lore of the outerbanks
and east coast commercial fishermen. Available at

Occasionally I am asked to perform a rig inspection aloft.

Great views of the harbor from up here!

Here I am after mapping out an extensive and advanced area of rotted and delaminated balsa
core on a fully cored sailboat. The owner had no
idea that the condition existed. The potential buyer
backed out of the deal pending repairs.
|

Here I am at the same vessel with the fiberglass
repair technician. We are discussing the possible
reasons for the delamination along with the scope
and method of repair. Note that the other side of
this vessel had the same condition in the same
general area.

When I am not working I am either sailing or fishing with my family. Here's a picture of Christopher McGowan with his 11 pound Fluke.
